Why Having Less Toys is Good for Your Kids

Less Toys
source: http://diggorylifestyle.co.uk/decluttering-a-childs-bedroom/

Is your child’s room overflowing with toys? Are they constantly toys on the ground, in the living room, kitchen, and just about every inch of your home?

Many of us assume that the more toys the better. We think that an abundance of toys equals a happy childhood.

But that actually isn’t the case. There are some reasons that having fewer toys actually benefit your child.

And fewer toys will benefit you as a parent in maintaining a clean and orderly home as well!

How Fewer Toys is Beneficial for Your Child:

  1. Longer Attention Span. When a kid has too many toys in their life, they tend to have a shorter attention span. A child will often not really appreciate any toy when they have a large abundance of other toys available at all times.
  2. Better Social Skills. Children with fewer toys have been shown to develop better interpersonal relationships with other kids and adults. They learn how to converse better and have stronger childhood friendships.
  3. They Learn to Take Better Care of Things. When kids have too many toys they naturally care less for them. They will not value them as much and therefore do not take care of them. If your child is always damaging their toys, take a good amount of toys away! They learn quickly to take care of the remaining toys.
  4. More Creative. Too many toys will often hinder a child’s creativity. Studies have shown that fewer toys lead to children becoming more creative and having stronger imaginations.
  5. More Resourceful. Fewer toys force children to be more resourceful with what they have to problem-solve with only the materials at hand. Resourcefulness is a great skill!
  6. Kid’s Fight Less. Many parents wrongly assume that more toys will lead to less fighting because there are more options available. However, the opposite is actually true. Siblings often argue over toys and every time a new toy is introduced, each child tries to establish their “territory” among the others. Children with fewer toys are forced to work together, collaborate, and share.
  7. They Become Less Selfish. Children who get everything they want believe that they deserve everything they want. This leads to selfishness and an unhealthy attitude.
  8. They Learn Perseverance. When a child has too many toys they will give up easily. If they don’t understand a toy they will quickly discard it for a different and easier toy. Kids with less will develop more patience, perseverance, and determination.
  9. Become Less Materialistic. True happiness can not be bought or found in the aisle of a toy store. Children who are encouraged to look outside of material things are more likely to find joy in the things that truly last.
  10. Fewer Toys Leads to Clean and Orderly Home. Fewer toys naturally lead to less toy clutter. When there are fewer toys there in your home it will be cleaner, more orderly, and healthier!

Toys are great for children to learn and grow through playtime. But the fact is that too many toys can have some negative impacts on your child.

Fewer toys will help your child learn valuable skills that will last a lifetime!

Tips to Teach Your Dog to Enjoy Baths

How to Bathe Your Dog
source: http://blog.theanimalrescuesite.com/skunk-tips-for-dogs/

Most dogs do not enjoy getting a bath. In fact, some dogs absolutely dread it!

Movies and television make the process of bathing your dog look like a fun and enjoyable time for everyone but in reality, this is usually a struggle for most pet owners.

We have some tips to help teach your dog to not hate getting a bath and maybe even enjoy it!

Tips for Teaching Your Dog to Enjoy Baths:

Positive Association

You want your dog to associate bath time with things he enjoys.

Offering treats, toys, and affection during the bathing process is very important to teach your dog to relate bath time with a positive experience.

Begin by having them step into the empty tub for a few minutes. Continue to offer treats, toys, and praise.

Next, work your way up to adding a small amount of warm water. Be sure that the water is not hot, this is unhealthy for your pet.

Take your time in this process. You may want to practice having your dog come to the bathing area without actually giving him a bath for awhile until he comes willingly.

Be patient and remember the importance of treats, toys, praise, and plenty of affections!

Start Young

Starting as soon as possible is very important in teaching your pup to enjoy bath time. If at all possible start this process when they are puppies. The younger the dog the better the chance they will associate the bath positively.

Protect the Ears

Be very careful not to get water in your dog’s ears during a bath. It can not only cause your dog to be uncomfortable but it can also lead to serious health issues.

IF possible place cotton balls in your dog’s ears during the bath to protect them. If this isn’t possible, just be careful when spraying your pup.

Work from the Neck Down

Not only is it important to keep your dog’s ears safe but you want to protect his eyes and mouth as well.

To protect your dog’s eyes and mouth during a bath be sure to wash him from the neck down.

To do this use a cup or bucket or your shower sprayer. There are even especially shower attachment sprays for bathing dogs like this one. https://www.amazon.com/Rinse-Ace-Sprayer-Showerhead-Attachment/dp/B000633XBE

You do not want to neglect to clean your dog’s face and ears. So, in order to clean your pup’s face, you will want to use a damp washcloth and gently wipe the entire face area.

Dry Properly

So pet owners like to use pet blow dryers, but most dogs do not like the loud noise it makes. You would have to train your dog not to be afraid of these either.

Otherwise, a good ole’ fashion absorbent towel will do the trick. Pet stores have especially absorbent towels for drying pets.

Be sure to dry your dog’s ears well and be prepared for the inevitable shake!

Remove Pet Hair from Furniture

pet hair furniture

Pets bring joy to many households. Our pets become a member of the family and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We love our pets but pet hair on furniture is a real pet peeve even for most animal lovers. We have some easy tips to remove pet hair from your furniture.

The best way to prevent pet hair on furniture is to not allow pets on the furniture in the first place, but for most pet owners unwinding after a long day on the couch with Fido is the best way to relax.

We don’t blame you! Snuggling up with your dog or cat is a great way to decrease stress, lower blood pressure, and relax. So, since our pets are joining us on the furniture let’s look at some ways to remove that unwanted pet hair from fabric furniture surfaces.

Tips to Remove Pet Hair from Furniture:

You can use simple everyday items from around your home to remove pet hair from furniture.

Using a Sponge to Remove Pet Hair

That’s right just a simple dry sponge can work nicely to remove pet hair from furniture. Just take a clean, dry kitchen sponge and slowly run it across the couch and the fur will cling to it.

Rubber Gloves to Remove Pet Hair

Another readily available household item for removing pet hair from furniture is your rubber kitchen gloves. Take a pair of rubber gloves and pull them on and run your hands along the surface of the couch or wherever else you are removing pet hair from.

The surface of the gloves creates tension with the surface of the furniture and the pet hair will roll off, which you can simple grab and throw away.

Make Your Own Lint Roller

Lint roller are great for removing pet hair from clothing, furniture, and other fabrics but the replacement sheets can be expensive if you are using them to remove fur from all your furniture. Instead make your own lint roller with, simply wrap some packing tape in a circle, sticky-side out. This will work just as well as a store-bought roller at a fraction of the price!

Dryer Sheets to Remover Pet Hair

For this technique, stop pet hair where it starts, on your pet! Simply take a dryer sheet and run it along your pet’s fur. The dryer sheet will attract loose hair. This is nice for when you don’t have time to get out the brush and do a full coat brushing.

Brush Your Pet Regularly

A oblivious technique to preventing pet hair on furniture is to remove shedding pet hair directly from your pet before it has a chance to end up all over your home.

Depending on your pet, breed, size, and coat brushing as much aa daily can help to prevent excessive shedding. An added bonus is that your pets coat will be soft and clean with regular brushing. Speak to your veterinarian for questions on how often to brush and bath your pet.

Use the Right Vacuum Cleaner to Remove Pet Hair

Use a cordless vacuum cleaner or the hand-held extension of your vacuum cleaner to remove pet hair from the surface of your couch. Many vacuums come with a specific extension for vacuuming furniture.
